The New York Yankees have done something! Spread the word! The Yankees have made a deal with someone other than Russell Martin!! Tell all your Yankee friends, celebrate, throw on your Yankee hat and wave your big foam Yankee finger!!! The Yankees did something!!
After getting some doubtful signals from Andy Pettitte for the past 74 days and Cashman swearing he'd never give up a number 1 Draft Pick for anyone other than Cliff Lee, he lied to all of us... and I LOVE IT.
Jon Heyman from Sports Illustrated is reporting that Rafael Soriano is a New York Yankee. The deal is about $35 million for 3 years. Read it HERE on MLB Trade Rumors.
So what does this mean? Well, for starters, the Yankees have an incredible bridge to get to Mo. Joba's in there (unless of course the decide that he's going to be a starter), they have David Robertson, they have Pedro Feliciano and Boone Logan and now the have Soriano.
The upside, we look incredible in our bullpen. Soriano last year have a career year as a closer for the Rays, a 1.73 ERA in 64 games. I would assume he can maintain that, unless he needs to adjust to setting up rather than closing. It's good the deal is for 3 years because if Mo is eventually phased out through his 2 year contract, Soriano can fill in to close when needed to give Mo a rest and over time, by the 3rd year of his contract, Soriano will be the permanent Yankees closer.
The downside, We need some starters who can pitch us into the 7th inning sometimes. Mitre and Nova are not those guys, although I wouldn't mind seeing what Nova has this spring training and try to stretch him a bit. If we have pitchers that can't pitch into the 6th or 7th consistently, our bullpen will be shot by June.
So, Say Hallelujah... Say Amen. The Yankees made a move everyone! The Yankees made a move!! Rejoice! Hug thy neighbor. Things are happening.
