WHY FREDDY IS OUR MAN

Dear Brian Cashman,

The fans have spoken. Well, the BYB fans, that is. After all, we may not be in the every day baseball meetings like you sir, but we know what we want and from our little poll on Bleeding Yankee Blue, The fans want Freddy Garcia as their 4th or 5 starter. That's from the outside looking in. That's simple thinking. That my friend, is what our fans want.

Your Friend,

--The Mighty Casey

It's really sad when you look at this free agent market and you see these names, all of which have had decent careers at one time or another, except Mitre, all of which have had injury and all of which have had great moments in their histories, except Mitre. (I actually think Mitre voted for himself.) That being said, it's slim out there, ain't it?

When you look at these guys, you see what Cashman is dealing with. That's why rumors are flying every day and a new name is attached every day. Because it's difficult. Some pitchers may have better qualities in one department but lousy in another, and so on. That's why there's nothing to write about for bloggers lately, because it's all over the map. Nothing solid coming from the Yankees camp.
So, you Bleeding Yankee Blue freaks, which I love, picked Freddy Garcia in our recent poll. Thanks for voting. But what do we really know about Freddy Garcia? This is what I know. He's a career 133-87 pitcher with a career 4.64 ERA. Never has been lights out, but has showed consistency and greatness at moments in his career. His best years were early on with the Mariners, early on, when he was young. It was back then that the Yankees liked the guy, but the timing was never right.

Since then Freddy's bounced around, had good seasons and bad, had injury and rehab and in 2006 with the White Sox he was 17-9 but his ERA was high... a 4.53 ERA. He's always racked up the strikeouts, but with age and injury and less outings, that has changed a bit. Bottom line, if we needed Freddy, he'd be a gamer on the mound. Is he an innings eater at this time in his career? I'm not so sure he's capable. I will say this, on his long road back to prove himself, he was 12-6 with the White Sox in 2010. Plug that in a 5th starter role, and it looks pretty good to me, if, he can stay healthy. Disagree? Comment here.
